Just a few years ago, internet access was seen as being a very exclusive source of communication and entertainment: it was hard to find it domestic situations and it was more likely to be found at workplaces and educational establishments, such as schools, colleges, universities and libraries. But now, just a short time later, the online world has grown considerably and you can do just about anything online, from sending emails, to making phone calls, to finding out specific information about a certain subject, to buying everyday essentials, such as food, drink and clothes. But what are we using the internet for? And can we harness our existing knowledge and skills of the online world in order to create a greater understanding and a better use for the online world?

While what people use the internet for can vary wildly according to location, interest and access to the internet, but some of the most common uses include: reading news articles, and keeping on top of the news, connecting with friends and relatives around the world, and buying products, such as clothes, furniture and anything else you can imagine from the comfort of their own home. However, the internet is probably one of the fastest-growing and most popular tools we have in the world today, it’s constantly changing, with new sites and new adventures cropping up everyday, so how we deal with something that will be one thing one day and another thing the next?

The answer is, you’ve got to keep on top of what’s going on in the online world, and there a number of ways that you can do this, such as by finding work in the online industry, and as this is a growing and very successful industry, it might not be so difficult to do, or doing your own research and keeping an eye on some of the best industry blogs, such as Google Blog, and technology news sites, like BBC sites. Get into social media if you haven;t already, get a Facebook account, a Twitter account and see what news stories you can find. In many cases breaking news stories will appear on sites like Twitter first because the public will be able to spread news stories fast via this medium. Companies will also release new stories on Twitter, such as the latest Apple releases and the like, so keep ahead of the news sites, and go direct to the source for news and information.

The internet is a very powerful communication tool, and as it was originally designed for sharing information, it stands to reason that it’s still used as a communication tool today. So start teaching yourself about this tool, find out it’s trends find out its weaknesses and see if there’s anything that you can do to improve your browsing experience, you never know, you could create the next big thing online. So do your research, get an understanding of the the internet, how it works, look at certain disciplines such as online marketing and SEO, and go out there and see what you can do to improve it.
