Free Screen Recording Software

[ad_1]

I want to talk about the different types of free screen recording software, otherwise known as screencasting software, what it is, what it does, how you can use it, and what people use it for.

I'm sure you've seen videos on YouTube and other places online where people are recording what they're doing on their computers. They're shooting a video of what they're actually seeing on their computer monitors.

Screen capture video is one of the best ways to share how-to instructions for any number of things, whether it's how to work a piece of software, how to use the back office of the business you're in, and a lot of other things.

I do quite a bit of screen capture videos in my business, as you can see on my YouTube channel and on my blog. It's just a great way to add some personalization to your blog posts!

It's also a fantastic way to still do video marketing even if you're extremely camera shy because you do not have to put your own face on camera – unless you choose to. Most screencasting software has the option of recording your computer monitor and your webcam simultaniously, so your viewers can still see you.

And if you absolutely dread being on camera, you just deselect or choose not to launch the webcam portion of the software.

Screecasting is also an easy way to provide "one-on-one" tutoring and instruction without having to physically be at the other person's home. So yes, gone are the days where you have to physically be there to tutor someone!

Using this type of video also makes it easier than trying to picture what's on the other person's screen while walking them step-by-step over the phone on whatever you're trying to teach them.

I remember when I was on the job, and if I had a problem with my computer, tech support would initiate a program where they would literally take over my computer. Pretty eerie actually!

While you're sitting there doing nothing, your computer is almost working by itself! GoToMyPC or Citrix is a tool that's still around for remote access to your or anyone else's computer.

But if you're not comfortable with access someone else's computer to do instruction, or the other person is not comfortable with allowing anyone to remotely access their computer, screencasting and sharing the video is the next best option.

So what are some free recording software programs are there? Here are a couple that I see a lot of marketers suggesting that new marketers use:

  1. Jing. Jing is free with an optional paid account, but you have to download the software to use it. I've used it before, a while back, but I found it a little hard to learn and get used to, so I stopped using it.
  2. Camtasia. You get a free trial with Camtasia but you also have to download the software. I personally found Camtasia a little expensive for my needs.
  3. Camstudio. Camstudio is free Open Source software, but you need to download it to use it.

My pick for the best free screen recording software is Screencast-O-Matic.

What I really like about this program is you do not have to download anything to use it! You simply create a free account, log on and start recording. The interface is super easy to learn and use.

With the free account, you do get a little "watermark" of the Screencast-O-Matic logo in the lower left corner of your video. But it's so noninvasive that it does not adversely affect the feel of the video; your videos will be no less professional looking with a watermark.

You can upgrade to the Pro account for only $ 15 a year, which is so inexpensive it'll fit into just about anyone's budget.

With the Pro account, which I used to have and may ever renew, you do not get the watermark on your videos and you can record more than 15 minutes of video. With the free account, you're limited to 15 minutes per video.

So if you've been looking for a great free screen recording software program that will not make you download anything to use it, I would definitely suggest heading over to Screencast-O-Matic and sign up!
