So, you want to play piano today? The good news is that you really can start right away. With that in mind, here are a few things to get you started.
Sit down at the piano and just play something, anything. Do not worry about what you play, you are only trying to familiarize yourself with the instrument. Notice how the keys sound as you hit them. Also notice how they sound different depending on how light or hard you strike them.
Not that you have some idea of what the keys sound like, notice how the black keys sound different from the white keys. The black keys make the same tone, but can represent two different notes A # A-sharp) and Bb (B-flat) are the same black key on the piano. That's because the notes going up the keyboard, from left to right) are C, C #, D, D #, E, F, F #, G, G #, A, A #, B. But, when you go down, the sharps become flats of the note that came just before: B, Bb, A, Ab, G, Gb, F, E, Eb, D, Db, C.
The next thing to know if you want to play piano today is finding middle C. Did you see how the list of notes above started with C? You can think of that as your home base on the keyboard, and it's easy to find. The black keys are in groups of three and two. Find the group of two closest to the middle of the keyboard. The white key immediately to the left (and touching) the left black key in the group of two is C.
Play the C note, then every key up and down the keyboard, saying the name of each note as you do so. Remember that the black keys are always sharps of flats, depending on which direction you're going. Do this a few times and you're off to a great start to play piano today!
